New York CLE Requirements
Attorney Requirements
New York attorneys are required to complete 24 hours of CLE every 2 years. At least 4 hours must be in the area of Ethics and at least 1 hour must in in the areas of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias. Attorneys must earn the required MCLE credits on the date of their reporting period.
Attorneys may carry over up to 6 hours of CLE credit to the next reporting period.
Newly Admitted Attorneys
Newly admitted attorneys must complete at least 16 transitional CLE credit hours in each of the first two years of admission to the Bar, as follows:
- Ethics and Professionalism: 3 hours
- Skills: 6 hours
- Law Practice Management and/or Areas of Professional Practice: 7 hours
The first set of 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed by the first anniversary of admission to the Bar, in the designated categories of credit. The second set of 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed between the first and second anniversaries.
Online Courses
New York attorneys may earn all 24 hours of CLE credit through approved online courses.
